Saint George is the Patron of Catalonia and England too. The red cross of St. George is on the English national flag. Also, St. George is the patron of Canada, China, Greece, Russia, Portugal, Palestine, Ethiopia, Serbia and Montenegro.
Historically, Saint George was a soldier. The legend says St. George saved a princess when a dragon wanted to eat her. First, this dragon was very hungry and he ate all the sheep or cows there were in the area. He was still hungry. He wanted to eat people and when the dragon was ready to eat the princess St. George appeared and saved her. From the dragon's blood a rose grew. Everybody was happy again.
St. George is a very important day for Catalan people. It is on April 23. It is not a holiday but it is one of the most important celebrations in the country. During St. George’s day, lovers exchange presents. It is a tradition that men give women a rose and women give men a book.
On April 23, lots of people are in the street walking around. Streets are full of stalls that sell roses and books. Also, there are lots of Catalan flags on the balconies of the majority of the houses. St. George's day is great!
